Empowering Futures: RMT and HCA Students Master Lifesaving Skills at First College’s Weekend Training

Last weekend, March 1–2, 2024, marked a pivotal moment for students in First College’s Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) and Health Care Assistant (HCA) programs. They participated in a crucial two-day First Aid and CPR certification course, stepping closer to becoming skilled, confident healthcare professionals. The event took place at First College’s well-equipped training center, offering a mix of hands-on practice, real-world simulations, and expert instruction to arm students with lifesaving competencies.

The training kicked off with an intensive focus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use. Students dove into the basics of emergency assessment, learned how to perform high-quality chest compressions, and practiced delivering rescue breaths. Guided by certified instructors, they honed their skills on training mannequins, ensuring they could adeptly handle situations involving adults, children, and infants.

A standout session of the day was the AED workshop, where students mastered the use of these critical devices. Engaging in team-based scenarios, they practiced coordinating crisis roles, from contacting emergency services to remaining poised under pressure.

Day 2: First Aid Essentials—From Theory to Action

The second day broadened to encompass a wide range of first aid topics, including:

  • Wound care and bleeding control
  • Burn management
  • Splinting for fractures and sprains
  • Managing allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Choking interventions

Through interactive workshops, students applied what they learned in simulated emergency settings, from evaluating mock injuries to prioritizing care in scenarios involving multiple victims. These exercises stressed the importance of quick decision-making, adaptability, and clear communication—essential skills for any fast-paced healthcare setting.

Why This Training Matters

For RMT and HCA students, obtaining first aid and CPR certification is not merely a requirement—it's a fundamental component of patient safety. Equipped with these skills, graduates are prepared to make informed decisions in clinical settings or during community emergencies, significantly impacting outcomes when every second counts.

"Our students didn’t just learn techniques—they embraced the mindset of a first responder," remarked one of the instructors. "Their commitment to practicing until these skills became second nature was truly inspiring. These are the future professionals who will carry this knowledge throughout their careers, making a difference and fostering trust wherever they go."
